Chromium is essential in producing these special steels. Ferrochrome, the alloy used in the manufacture of chromium steel, contains 70% chromium. Up to 3% chromium is added to steel to increase its corrosion and abrasion resistance. This type of steel is used for rails, armor piercing shells and armor plates.
Nickel-chrome are of much use in the automobile industry. Steel alloys containing 12% of 18% chromium and nickel are commonly called stainless steels and are widely used in the manufacture of cutlery and surgical instruments. Dairies, breweries, food processing plants, chemicals plants and distilleries are also large consumers of stainless steels. Nichrome, a special alloy of nickel and iron, is the basic element of nichrome wires used for electrical appliances. Chromium when alloyed with tungsten, cobalt and molybdenum produces stellite which is used for high speed machine tools because of its strength and heat resistance.
Refractory chromite ores are used in the manufacture of refractory bricks which are in turn used for lining furnaces.
A number of chromium compounds obtained by the chemicals treatment of chromite have great important uses in industry. Among them are the chromates and dichromates of sodium and potassium, chrome pigments and the compounds used in chromium plating. Sodium dichromate is used in metal treatment processes like glass etching, bright dipping of brass to control the rates of solution of oxygen and zinc in brass and acid cleaning of aluminum and magnesium; as oxidizing agent in dyestuff manufacture and as one of the constituents of preservatives of timber.
Chromium plating represents a large proportion of the total Philippine chromium consumption. This is done electrolytically where chromium trioxide containing little amounts of sulfuric acid acts as electrolyte.
Large quantities of chromium salts are used in the tanning of light leathers. Tanning of gloves and garments is effected by means of basic chromium sulfate.
